Amazonian Trogon Not on Perú List

06 Jul 2024 21:21 #1 by Matthew Koch
Hello,

Looks like Amazonian trogon has not been included in your Perú list by error.  This species was accepted as valid by the South American Classification Committee (the relevant authority) long ago now, and indeed appears on your SACC South American list.

Thanks for all your work managing this daunting array of lists,

Matthew Koch

Dear Mike:

Thanks for making the change for Amazonian trogon.  I hate to be a pain, but I see that Rio Madeira stipplethroat falls into the same category:  it has been accepted as a valid species by the "SACC," and appears on your South American list, but is not on the Perú list.  Sorry, I have been adding sightings from a fairly extended trip when I have a chance, and therefore did not perceive these problems within a short timespan.

Thanks again for maintaining this wonderful service,

Matthew Koch

Hello again,

I am seeing that Southern lapwing in also not on the Perú list.  That is a very common bird in Perú.

Thanks again,

Matthew Koch

Hello again,

At the other end of the spectrum in terms of frequency, long-winged harrier also needs to be added to the Perú list.  This bird is historically rare in Perú, but is being seen regularly now in eastern Madre de Dios during the austral winter.

Thanks again,

Matthew Koch

Dear Mike:

Thanks very much for your quick attention to these revisions.  Sorry, I found another problem just now:  Humaita antbird should appear on the Perú list, as its split from spot-winged antbird has been accepted as valid by the "SACC," it appears on Bubo's SACC list for South America, and it occurs in Perú.

Thanks again,

Matthew Koch

Dear Mike:

Thanks for making that change.  I have just noticed that your lists based on "SACC" continue to refer to Southern caracara, but the SACC as well as Clements have lumped that species now into crested caracara (and northern South American individuals were never part of that taxon in any event).  I am afraid you will need to make that change on all the lists based on SACC (cf.  www.museum.lsu.edu/~Remsen/SACCBaseline05.htm cv. Falconiformes), essentially virtually all of your South American lists.

Thanks yet again,

Matthew Koch

Thanks Matthew. We had lumped the two Caracaras but didn't change the English name, which I've now just done.

Dear Mike:

My goodness, that was remarkably fast; I would say you demonstrated falcon-like speed, but indeed caracaras are rather lumbering flyers.  Thanks again.

All the best,

Matthew Koch

Dear Mike:

I have not been encountering omissions on the Perú list lately, but today I noted that ashy-headed greenlet does not figure there, and should, as it is on the "SACC" list.  This species is much more commonly seen in eastern South America, but Perú boasts a small and curiously isolated breeding population.

Thanks again,

Matthew Koch

Dear Mike:

I am seeing that Varzea thrush needs to be added to the Perú list.  It is an interesting species, you would not want to exclude it.

Thanks again for all your work in maintaining these lists,

Matthew Koch

Thanks Matthew, now added.

We don't have very many active South American listers, so please do keep the corrections coming!

Dear Mike:

Thanks for making that change so quickly.  Yes, I would imagine a combination of the greatly increased cost of travelling and dismaying reports of forest destruction from the region have not been helpful in stimulating interest in the region's birds abroad.

Thanks again,

Matthew Koch
