Why does pan-listing exclude years before 2001?

Hi Jim

You can specify dates of before 2001 against any individual species entry. However, you're right that we don't currently allow year lists for before 2001. Given that we started BUBO Listing (the original bird-only site that PSL is based on) in 2007, we never felt a need to cater for 20th century year lists - and I don't think we've ever been asked to do so. It's nice not to have hugely long drop-downs in menus if possible. However, there's no real reason we couldn't go back further if someone wanted to enter old year-lists. Is that what you're trying to do?

Cheers

Andy Mus.

Hi Andy,

Yes, I have an old bird list from a site in Essex that I used to do some birding at in the mid-1980s. I can't remember if I sent any of these records to the Essex Birdwatching Scoiety at the time. I just thought it would be nice to have them on.

Cheers,

Jim

Aha, OK. So if you want to add a list for a site where you went for multiple years, you maybe would be better off to do a "site life list". e.g. You'd go in and say, "Abberton Reservoir" (or wherever) and life list. Then when you add individual species, you can add any year you want (the pre-2001 limit doesn't apply there).

Do note, however, that if you're wanting records to get to the Essex Birdwatching Society, then PSL / BUBO Listing is not the right tool for the job. We don't pass any data on, in large part because our lists are not made up of true records - i.e. you can only add a species to a list once, whereas for proper recording, you may want multiple sightings on different dates. If you want your data to flow, you're better to use BirdTrack - or iRecord if it's more than just birds.

Hope this helps!
