Firsts for the British Isles

Have you been fortunate enough to find any species new to the British Isles or United Kingdom? Following on from the number of biological records collated, you can now record the number of firsts, plus details of the finds: please do fill in both on your profile (Edit > Update your details) if you have found something new. 

The collective total – currently 203 – will then appear on the front page in the Statistics box, and the details visible to others on your profile.

As several people have mentioned already there are different ‘levels’ of involvement and contribution to a country first. Ideally we are looking first and foremost at who was the finder but if you had a significant identification role in a record too, then do please count that. It is natural that some people will claim the same species if it was a joint find and that is fine. I will keep track of the species and adjust the collective total accordingly.

Similarly, I recently found the bug Geocoris megacephalus new to the British Isles on Jersey; in the following years, someone in the United Kingdom could well go on to find that same species as new to the UK, and that would be fine too.
